Evolutions in the Nation-State due to the advancements in Information Technology: Alternative Futures

Abstract

Government institution, is one of the most important institutions affecting economic strategies in countries. In international-relation scope, this is known as nation-state. Fundamental changes in this Concepts as a result of advancements in information technology and the Globalization approach are evident. These changes are happening so rapidly and are so deep that may introduce discontinuity and rapture in social relations and even total metamorphosis of how state controls the political and economic directions and strategies. Consistent with changes and social developments, social phenomenon of the state has continuously been changing throughout history from ancient times till now; hence also we can expect its change in future. Especially in light of the wide-ranging changes that have taken place in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and in parallel with the formation of the process of globalization, evolution of the concept of nation-state seems to be inevitable in line with these evolutions. It is important to address this issue if, in the future, the nation-state undergoes conceptual or functional changes; because without considering these changes, any foresight will not be credible with regard to the future of nations, economic and developments in politics and international relations. In this paper, some forms of functional and conceptual transformation and development of the nation-state in the future is described and possible alternative futures based on the advancements in information technology and possible changes in the elements of the nation-state are described
